Course Summary:
The UAS Basic Pilots Course is a 32 -hour program of instruction designed specifically and ONLY for agencies that already have an established UAS program and are flying missions with protocols and a comprehensive policy in place. The curriculum is focused on piloting skills coupled with training in UAS safety and general UAS program operations. The class begins with an online FAA test preparation course that culminates with an in-class review just prior to taking the FAA (Part 107) Aeronautical Knowledge Test for the Remote Pilot Airman Certificate.
Students will:
- Explain UAS safety management strategies and safety culture
- Demonstrate preflight and emergency safety procedures
- Demonstrate UAV flight setup and pre-flight
- Demonstrate UAV piloting skills in basic public safety mission-sets
- Demonstrate UAV piloting skills in a competition course, under stress
Each student will receive a minimum of eight hours of flight instruction and log at least 2 ½ hours of actual flight time with a UAV as a member of an UAS deployment team. All instruction will be consistent with the FAA’s current rules and regulations. Successful graduates will be qualified under the FAA’s Part 107, to operate as a Remote Pilot in Command for standard operations (pending a TSA background investigation). Students will return to their respective organizations as certified pilots who are skilled and operational.

The Los Angeles County Regional Training Center (LACRTC) is not affiliated with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA Remote Pilot Airman Certificate is achieved by successfully completing the FAA Aeronautical Knowledge Test. LACRTC has partnered with FAA testing centers to include the FAA test as part of this course (test fee is included in the tuition).
