For Implementation of a Comprehensive Aviation Program Based on Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Platforms.

Course Summary

The Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Program Operators DoD Course was specifically designed for the Department of Defense and is 40 hours of instruction designed to provide organizations with the knowledge and skills necessary to properly maintain or create an aviation program based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms.

Students will:

Identify and explain agency specific mission sets
Demonstrate the ability to create or modify a UAS safety management system
Demonstrate the ability to create or modify a UAS maintenance program
Explain UAS operations and limitations
Create or modify a UAS training program
Explain how to apply for Public Use Certificates of Authorization and waivers under Part 107
Demonstrate the ability to operate a UAV in basic mission sets

Each student will receive a minimum of eight hours of flight instruction as a member of a UAS deployment team and log at least 2 ½ hours of actual flight time with a UAV. All instruction will be consistent with the FAA’s current rules and regulations. Successful graduates will be qualified to operate under the FAA’s Public Use provisions and have the ability to apply for FAA Certificates of Waiver for those instances that do not conform to Part 107.

This class is eligible to include the 16-hour FAA 107 Ground School immediately prior to this course as a combination course for those agencies desiring students to receive a Part 107 Commercial Pilot’s License. [click here for additional information]

Successful graduates of the combination course will be qualified under the FAA’s Part 107, to operate as a Remote Pilot in Command for standard operations.

Course Presentation Requirements

Classroom large enough to accommodate five groups of five students per table (recommended 6’ round tables)
One six-foot standard rectangle banquet-style table with three chairs for instructors (located in the back of the room)
One six-foot standard rectangle banquet-style table (located in the front of the classroom)
Internet Access
Podium (If available, not required)
Audio, projector & screen or equivalent flatscreen TV system for presentations
Securable room for equipment storage and charging 250-350 square feet (must have access to power)
Cleared airspace, minimum 100-foot ceiling
Outdoor flying area
- Five flight zones approximately the size of a tennis or basketball court, one for each group or a cleared area approximately the size of a football field.
- Flat unobstructed area clear of trees and overhead power lines/obstacles
If possible, an indoor flying area approximately the size of a gymnasium is a good backup for inclement weather such as rain and high wind.
All COVID-19 protocols, testing, cleaning, and supplies are the responsibility of the host agency.
